Weekend Round Up 06/10/18
A BAD DAY AT THE OFFICE
Coming up against a well organised and drilled students’ side was always going to be a challenge but Leicester stepped up to start the game full of determination and vigour. The first 10 mins saw a very well worked ball put Flora England through on goal and a half save from the keeper fell nicely for Katie Long to put the ball away to take the team 1-0 up. Students’ regrouped and piled on the pressure and with well rehearsed penalty corners, they were able to get a few back and suddenly Leicester were 3-1 down.
A dubious lifted first shot at goal on a PC just before half time took the score to 4-1. The half time team talk galvanised the squad and they fought back coming close on several points but the game ended as a 6-1 loss and a gutted squad from Leicester.
Next week sees Leicester take on Timperley in a 2.45 pb game at home and the team will be keen to right the wrongs of the previous week.
Squad: Caitlin Jeffries (GK), Carmen Simpson, Flora England, Jess Honarmand, Katie Long, Katie Mason, Kerry Williams, Liz George, Lizzie Honarmand, Louisa Heathcote, Rachel Mack, Sophie Horne, Steph Hale, Tara Lloyd, Mina Nagano
ONE POINT IN THE BAG
One of the more entertaining 0-0 draws you’ll watch.
Both teams set out with their game plans and attempted to take control of the game. It was Leicester who enjoyed early dominance and the best chance of the opening quarter of the game feel to Emma in front of goal, but the Leamington keeper was out quickly to apply pressure and force the attempt wide. This was shortly followed by a barrage of Leicester corners from which Etta managed to get a touch behind her own back on Alice’s strike, sending the ball up into the net however the goal was disallowed. We are still trying to work out why.
Leamington came back into the game but in truth they failed to threaten the Leicester goal. Combinations of Gemma, Anna, Lucy and Jen, Megan and Ellie cleared up any threat before it reached Jenna in goal.
With the second half came new challenges for Leicester with Leamington threatening the circle and forcing Jenna into a number of saves. However, the defending ensured they were relatively routine for the Leicester’s keeper. Leamington’s best chances came from several short corners, but again the defensive unit kept them out.
Leicester’s opportunities from open play we limited but came closest to scoring from a short corner when Jen hit the post from a blistering shot.
The second half became end to end with Leamington’s quick forwards looking dangerous on the break.
In the end a draw was a fair result.

RAIN STOPS PLAY
On Saturday Leicester 3s took on Half Century in the pouring rain. The team were left pondering how we could possibly of lost 1-0 having had almost total possession! Leicester created chances were created both in open play and set pieces but Half Century dung in in defence and held out after scoring their only short corner opportunity of the game.
No point dwelling on what could have been but I am sure we are all looking forward to putting it right next week by starting with the same intensity we finished the game with! Who was the player of the match, not sure but everyone left the pitch reflecting on what they need to work on in training to claim that prize next week.

FOURTHS DEALT A HARSH LESSON
The young 4’s squad played against Loughborough Uni 4’s on Saturday and lost the match 9-0.
It was a terrific performance from Loughborough and will go a long way to showing our young team how hockey can be played. Credit to the 4’s though who never gave up despite the score line. A shout out to Jess and Hannah making their Leicester debut from DMU joining the club for Saturday hockey and hopefully the start of many more players to come. Both players equipped themselves well and Hannah, debuting in goal, never let her head drop. Match highlight though was Steve Ellis falling over a rogue crate of balls whilst umpiring!
Squad: Hannah Brown (GK), Alexia Scudamore, Anna Godwin, Caitlin Pittham, Elena Bensi, Jane Worlding, Jess Duffy, Lauren Ellis, Sarah Levy, Sophie Levy, Tara Bahra
Next game vs Ashby 2s away 10am pb
FIFTHS BATTLE TO A DRAW
Roundhill 1-1 Leicester 5ths
In thoroughly miserable conditions, Leicester 5ths fought back from a one goal deficit to grab a point. The game was fairly even but Leicester carved out numerous chances and found the Roundhill keeper in good form as well as our strikers’ radar being a little off. Catherine Smith made her senior adult debut and had a good game marauding down the right. We missed the intelligent forward runs of last week’s Player of the Match (and a member of England Hockey Team of the Week) Tara Bahra as well as the forceful play of Jen Pollock.
It was against the run of play that we conceded a goal which gave Roundhill confidence and led to a few penalty corners that our defence dealt with, notably number one runner Alex Peet and keeper, Aleena Moti. We lost captain Sarah Levy and the lively Sophie Levy as they went across to LGS to play for the 4ths which meant sickly Player Coach, Gaynor Nash, took the pitch for the first time this season. Having spent 55 minutes coughing on the sideline she somehow made a decent contribution leading to several penalty corners, the last of which she powered through the keeper. We ended the game pressing for a winner but glad of a point.
Their Player of the Match was their keeper and ours was the always dangerous Lydia Cross. Comedy moment was provided by umpire Paul Lineham sending off a spectator for various uncomplimentary observations.
Squad: Aleena Moti, Anna Kellie, Rosemary Jacques, Hazel McSweeney, Jane Cotterill, Emma York, Joy York, Sarah Levy, Sophie Levy, Catherine Smith, Alex Peet, Gaynor Nash and Lydia Cross.
