Magnificent Seven for Men's First Team

A trip to Sutton Coldfield gave the Men’s Firsts another chance to display their sartorial flair as, instead of wearing the unfashionable white away kit, captain Declan decided the team would look fetching in some light blue netball bibs, having forgotten the team's shirts...

City started strongly and were ahead within a couple of minutes as some slick interplay between Declan and Mike set Karl through on goal and his powerful strike was too much for the home ‘keeper. The trick was repeated shortly after as Jacob D stepped out of defence to pick out Karl in the D and he slotted the ball in for his second.

A quick fire hat-trick was complete as Boyce fired the ball in to the D for Karl to pick it up on his reverse before dribbling around a couple of defenders and slapping the ball in to the net. The next goal was possibly motivated by the video of Holcombe’s ridiculous goal against Beeston (find the video), a powerful ball in to the D from utility man Ross saw Rahul slide in to deflect the ball in to the roof of the net with his reverse stick

City then added a fifth as Mo S was rewarded for some strong running as he pressured the home defence in to an error before slotting home the loose ball. As the half came to and end, Sutton Coldfield fashioned several chances with some pacy play on the break and were unlikely not to score from a short corner which ricocheted around the D before it was eventually cleaned up by ‘keeper Harry.

Half time saw a reminder of coach Oriwa’s instructions as goal shooter David M emphasised the need to hit the baseline when attacking. This approach paid off early in the second half as a long ball forward saw David pickup the ball on the baseline and calmly lay it in to the path of Rahul who slapped home his second of the game.

City almost added another as a long ball in to the D was flicked goal wards by Jamie and only a good save by the home ‘keeper prevent City adding to their lead. The scoring was finished mid way though the second half when Luke picked out captain Declan in acres of space on the left side of the D and he slapped the ball across the goal and in to the far corner of the net.

The home side rallied late on and some strong wing play had the visitors scrambling to protect their clean sheet and number one runner Henry was needed to chase down a number of short corners before the final whistle was blown.

Back at Sutton Coldfield’s club house the visitors were treated to a Mexican feast which set a very high bar for post game teas.
