Leicester 5ths progressed to the first round of the County Cup after winning their Preliminary Round match 5-2 against Leicester University 2nds. The University side had some new players and had improved since losing 5-0 to the 5ths only a few weeks ago. Despite a problem when the Manor Road pitch had been double booked, the match started on time and with Leicester on top straight away. It was soon clear that the Uni side was going to be tough to break down but the breakthrough came when Jennifer Pollock firmly dispatched a penalty corner past the students' keeper.
If we hoped that the floodgates would open that was not to be as the students snapped into tackles and largely kept Leicester out of the circle. However, their resistance cracked again and Joy York, with a deft deflection, was able to register her first goal since making her return to hockey. The students fought back though and keeper Aleena Moti made good blocks before the University managed to get on the scoresheet.
In the second half the game remained quite tight but Leicester got their noses further in front when Lauren Elllis was on hand to prod the ball home. Back came the students though to make it 3-2 and with a green card against the 5ths for not being 5 metres from a free hit there were tense moments. Lydia Cross looked to have made the game safe with a typically tenacious finish but Joy York made it certain with her second goal, a good hit at a penalty corner deflected in by a defender.
The 5ths now have the task of playing Loughborough Students 5ths who beat our own 4ths.
