LRHA LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ROUN UP 13/05/17

Early on Saturday morning, Leicester arrived at Mountsorrel for a very long day of hockey for the end of season league tournament. Despite fielding a side containing 5 under 14s, we finished the day a very respectable 5th position out of nine teams, having won 4 and drawn 2 of our 8 matches. Unfortunately, nobody kept a record of our individual results throughout the day, although we do know we beat the eventual winners of the tournament 2-1!

Throughout the tournament, it was our junior players who impressed the most. Elise Atkinson showed her versatility throughout the day, showing strength and skill across a range of positions on the field. Katie Evans Puttick worked hard both on and off the ball to create options for her teammates and apply pressure on the opposition relentlessly, playing mature, unselfish hockey. Anna Godwin also worked hard to create lots of chances for the team and showed great composure
under pressure. Anna was unlucky to only get on the score sheet once, but did manage to score a brilliant individual goal. The top goal scorer for Leicester was Hattie Lester, who managed to score 5 goals overall! Hattieā€™s positioning in the D was excellent, and as the day progressed and she grew in confidence she showed some really good individual skills to eliminate players 1-on-1. Emma Sleeman also had her fair share of goals, scoring 4 herself and setting up lots of the others. Emma
always looked dangerous on the ball and was able to threaten the opposition D and initiate attacks from a variety of positions.

All this said, the team would not have fared so well without the brilliant, slightly more mature, defensive unit of Sophie, Marion, Hazel, and Caz in goal. The solidity at the back allowed the whole team to play with a sense of confidence, safe in the knowledge that all the defenders were able to win the ball for us if an attack broke down. Hattie Barnes also provided strength and pace through the middle of the pitch early in the day, scoring a couple of well worked goals, but it was great to see how well our younger players, especially Katie at centre mid, stepped up and filled the role in her absence later on

Thanks to George and Carol for umpiring for us, and to Hazel for putting together a team and organising us on the day!
