4ths Oldies Secure Win
A somewhat depleted Leicester 4ths took on an equally ravaged Melton side on Saturday in what would prove to be the last League fixture of the season. With several players missing on Duke of Edinburgh award courses there were call ups for 5th team youngsters Hope Senior and Charlotte Hickman and the slightly less young Jane Cotterill. Jane formed an antique strike pairing with player-coach Gaynor Nash and it must be quite some time since Leicester's attacking duo had a combined age of over 110.
In cold, damp and windy conditions it did not take long for the pair to roll back the years. First Nash latched onto a good ball into the D from Abbie McArthur to put the 4ths ahead and then Nash's long ball found Cotterill in space and she calmly planted the ball beyond the Melton keeper. Melton came back well and Steph Mason made good saves before being beaten by a well struck shot into the far corner.
The second half was very even and could have gone either way but ten minutes from the end Leicester won a penalty corner which was stopped by Nash and slipped to Jo Wyeth who made no mistake with a powerful drive.
The win leaves the 4ths in the lower half of the table, having had to concede the outstanding fixture against Half Century because it cannot be played within the League's accepted timescale. Attention now turns to Summer League with the first scheduled games on May 18th.
